The Agony of Indecision

For most of my life, I’ve agonized over decisions, especially at times when I believed they had huge consequences. Then I learned that people who can’t make decisions easily or agonize over them tend to have a lack of trust in themselves and the Universe/God/higher intelligence. So today, we’re going to talk about how to make better, calmer and wiser decisions and have more faith and trust in the universe to help guide you in the right direction.

Our ability to make good decisions determines our success, both in life and in relationships. We alone, are at the center of our life – you are the common denominator in all your life events, right? Though this can seem self-centered (and it is), it’s actually an empowering thing to realize. You have the power to affect real change in your life, how awesome is that?

Whatever is going on for us in our relationships, health, and career or other, we have the power to change it all and with a little help from our higher intelligence, we don’t have to fret over making the best choices for ourselves.

Now, having said all that, I’m going to throw you a twist… ready?

What if there was no such thing as a bad decision?

Mind blown… and, wait, what are you saying Giovanna?

Now don’t get me wrong, there are bad decisions. For example, deciding to rob a bank… BAD decision people! Hear me out.

Using that question as a tool is what has helped me and many of my clients over the years to help them get out of the paralysis and fear of making the wrong choice. Asking that question takes all the crazy negative consequences (often imagined) out of the equation. What if the Universe was self correcting? Just like the GPS in your car. If this is true than you can’t make a bad choice right?

I read this quote from Deepak Chopra in The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life, and it totally transformed my relationship to this idea:

“If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another.

The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.

If this sounds too mystical, refer again to the body. Every significant vital sign- body temperature, heart rate, oxygen consumption, hormone level, brain activity, and so on- alters the moment you decide to do anything… decisions are signals telling your body, mind, and environment to move in a certain direction.”

We agonize because we fear making the wrong decision and more over its consequences.  But if we can understand that there’s no right or wrong decision and that the Universe is simply a reorganizing and supportive energy, then we’re liberated from this constraint. The trick is we have to invite Spirit to work with us, to step in as guide. Ironically, when it seems that the Universe has stopped communicating is actually when we’re in indecision and relying soling on our intellect to help us work it out.

Invite Spirit, make a decision, take a step and watch things unfold…

So ask yourself how is this showing up in your life? Where is your inability to make a decision keeping you stuck?

Practice making hard decisions:

  1. Take 10 minutes in the morning and at night to go into your quiet space and tap into your higher self—your connection to the universe. Allow yourself to drift away and call in your higher self or source and allow the peace and guidance to come from something greater than you.

  2. Ask yourself a question—a decision that is pending, or something that poses a challenge for you

  3. Ask the spirit or higher guidance to come and help us in this process of tapping in

  4. Let go of your decision. In surrendering, you allow your higher guide to come in and help you.

Remember—it’s a muscle. So the more you develop it the more you’ll have the ability to make better decisions and faster decisions.
